Kewanee, IL — In a show of support for local workforce development and hands-on learning, Gustafson Ford has donated professional-grade automotive tools to the Kewanee High School automotive program. The donation is part of Gustafson Ford’s ongoing commitment to building a career pipeline for aspiring automotive technicians in the community.

The tool set will be used by students enrolled in KHS’s newly launched mechanics course, taught by Dave Armstrong. Armstrong brings a wealth of real-world experience to the classroom, having served as an automotive technician at Gustafson Ford and as a U.S. Navy plane captain. His career includes hands-on expertise in vehicle diagnostics and repairs. Since 2012, Armstrong has also owned and operated his own automotive business, giving him a deep understanding of the value of community engagement and support. His background equips students with industry-relevant skills while instilling discipline, problem-solving, and professionalism.

Representatives from Gustafson Ford, Kewanee High School, and the Kewanee Schools Foundation gathered for the donation presentation outside the automotive classroom at Kewanee High School, alongside the Ford Pro Mobile Service van. Owner Kurt Gustafson presented the donation to Kewanee High School and noted that this act continues his father’s legacy of giving young people opportunities to succeed. Kurt’s daughter, Courtlin, and his wife, Carrie, were also present for the donation and saw first-hand the impact of their family’s legacy on the next generation of technicians.

The Kewanee High School automotive program provides students with the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in automotive repair, preparing them for industry-recognized credentials and career pathways. Access to professional-grade tools allows students to train to the standards employers expect, building a skilled workforce for the region.

With Ford Motor Company’s backing and local engagement, the Technician Pipeline program aims to continually support Kewanee High School's Automotive College and Career Pathway Endorsement Program. Superintendent Rebecca Baney thanked Gustafson Ford for their support of the Kewanee Community Unit School District 229’s Mission, which is to “educate the whole child by inspiring intellectual curiosity and honoring each student’s emotional and personal growth.”
